Congolese TV
We now have a TV. There are only 3 channels but it's quite fun to watch. One is public (RTNC), the other two are private. Digital Congo for instance is owned by ... president Kabila. With the elections 10 days now, every single TV show is about him. This morning they were talking about songs for kids but half of the frame was occupied by his picture ;-)
In the same way, CCTV (not the Chinese channel) is owned by Jean-Pierre Bemba (remember the alleged cannibal story on my blog?), and they mostly show his tour of Congo as he's running for president too (he does look a bit like Tony Soprano, don't you think?).
Otherwise, the political commercial for candidates are straight out of MTV. Here you have a funky example of how to promote Candidate number 83 on voting sheet 1 (because there are so many candidates, especially for local elections, your voting bulletin is 3-4 pages long at least).
As you can guess, the only talk in town is the nearing election. The town is full of cars blasting songs on loudspeakers dedicated to each candidate (pictures soon). In the meantime, you can win a brand new car by being the first to send 50,000 text messages in the next 3 weeks. Good luck !
